| Two old UNIX servers that ran legacy production scheduling and control applications over seven years old needed to be replaced with newer hardware. Current hardware is not supported with the original UNIX OS. Site had several Linux-based web servers. Decision was made to replace all hardware with new rack-mounted systems. Site wished to have greater hardware independence and fail-proof server infrastructure. | Two new servers were installed. A hypervisor was installed on the hardware and all servers were rebuilt on virtual guest servers. Virtual guests created consist of: 2x UNIX servers (production), a MySQL server, the 2x email servers, 2x DNS servers. All servers can be migrated from one hardware system to the other. While the site operates best with both physical machines in operation, a single server is able to host all guest servers to keep the site running. |
| A 22-user food packaging company wanted to replace an aging Windows NT4 server and expand disk storage capacity. Backup and recovery demands led to a decision to back up essential data to external removable storage. |
The site chose to install CentOS and Samba to continue to support their Windows XP Professional desktop systems. An external USB drive is used to store copies of file system backups. The Samba file server has operated for six months without any problems. Performance is significantly faster than the system it replaced. All data was successfully migrated to the new system, cleaned up, and reorganized to facilitate backup and recovery (if ever needed). |
